My name is Erik Mueller-Harder, and I design, edit, and publish About Cabot. I moved to Cabot with my wife, Karen, and our children Timothy and Clara in August, 2001. About Cabot began as an outgrowth of our attempts to get to know the area better and keep track of local events and news. It seemed like a good idea to share what we found. Since About Cabot launched in August, I've been running About Cabot as a volunteer. In the 2002 Town Meeting, the town narrowly rejected a measure to use $7,000 of UDAG grant funds "to engage the services of a web site designer to work with [the Planning Commission] to design and implement a comprehensive town web site, to test and modify it as appropriate, and develop a plan to sustain it over time." I urge the Planning Commission to make another attempt in 2003. Cabot deserves a comprehensive resource, available to those with computer access even if they're not able to get out of the house or if they're wintering over in southern climes. If done properly, a town site would be useful, simple, and useable, no matter whether you're viewing the site from a brand-new supercomputer with a DSL connection, a ten-year-old computer with a 14.4 modem, or a Palm Pilot or other PDA. The site could include agendas, schedules, and minutes of the Selectboard, the Planning Commission, the Library Trustees, and other boards and committees. It could include special notices from and information about the library, the church, the school, the Girl Scouts, the Cabot Coalition, Cabot Senior Citizens, and any other not-for-profit group in town. The site could include information about Cabot for tourists, historical and genealogical information, photographs by townspeople, etc. -- the sky's the limit! If such a measure passes next year, I certainly hope that I'd be chosen as the developer of the official town web site. This would enable me to vastly expand this site and to integrate it closely with the offices and functions of the town. If I'm not chosen, I'd work with the developer to make the sites complementary. Do make yourself at home. Look around, use the calendar, and come back often to see new features as we add them. If you have any questions or comments, or if you know of any sites or events that we should list, do please send e-mail. |
